David Legwand was shipped out of New Jersey yesterday in a surprise move that many are questioning. Legwand was a major contributor for the team last season and was sharing the top center position with Scott Gomez this year. So why did the Devils do it?
"Legwand's play in the offensive zone this season was average. His play in the defensive zone was non-existant. That wasn't good enough for us" stated Devils GM Dylan McLaughlin. "We got tired of waiting for him to show us the leadership that we saw last year".
While the trade appears to be a 1st line offensive centerman for two 4th liners, it may not be so clear.
"I have been watching Chris Kelly all year and I am convinced he will blossom into a two way competitor capable of playing big minutes."said the GM. "He may not have the scoring potential that Legwand has, but Kelly is valuable in so many other ways. His terrific speed and work ethic are his best assets."
The other player coming over from L.A. is Oleg Saprykin. He is a smallish winger with some offensive potential. He will get a good opportunity to show what he can do.
With New Jersey in a battle for their playoff lives, the loss of Legwand hurts. Scott Gomez is still out with an injury so all of a sudden, the Devils are very thin up front. Players like Mike Fisher, Patrick Eaves and Antoine Vermette will be asked to step up as the team continues to fight.
