Devils conquer the OTHL

Dylan McLaughlin

GM, New Jersey Devils

The New Jersey Devils crossed the finish line tonight and became the OTHL Cup champions for 2005. Many on the team will admit their was some fear when they were down 2 - 1 in the series but coming back in games 4 and 5 gave them all the momentum they needed. The Phoenix Coyotes simply could not hold them off losing 5 - 2 in what would be the final game of the season.

The Coyotes were missing Peter Forsberg, who was injured in game 4, and that left a big hole on the team. But the truth is, Forsberg or no Forsberg, this was New Jersey's Cup to win. Martin Brodeur distinguished himself as the clear number one goalie in the league with this post-season performance and the entire team fed off that. Since early in the regular season, the Devils felt they were destined for something special and the more they believed, the more it became true.

Scott Neidermayer who has been very quiet this whole post-season, stepped up tonight with a monstrous performance. He finished the night +3 and registered 3 assists. He prevented the Coyotes from getting any attack going and jumped up into the play to create glorious chances for his team. Pavel Kubina also pitched in with a goal, an assist and a +3. Kubina has had such a good post-season that some thought he would rival Brodeur for the Conn Smythe award. High praise for the Czech defenceman.

Meanwhile back in New Jersey, fans were stumbling out of bars and filling up the streets. The downtown core quickly became an ocean of people delirious with joy. Fireworks were set off outside the Continental Airlines Arena where Devils fans were BBQ-ing and drinking beer. The atmosphere around the entire city was electric.

For Phoenix, this night has to be very disappointing. They were so close to the title and it slipped through their fingers. They will have to endure the long off-season that is about to begin and then try again next year.

New Jersey would like to congratulate the Phoenix Coyotes on a great playoff run as well as congratulating the entire OTHL league for a fantastic first season.

And now.....let the party begin!
