Wings respond to Gretzky's challenge

Jordan O'Brien

GM, Detroit Red Wings

Earlier in the week head coach Wayne Gretzky called out numerous players on the team to step up or be benched, and when the Great One speaks those around him listen, as was the case this time. Forwards like Tony Amonte, Martin Erat, Mike York, and Brian Rolston have all stepped up and started producing, while Steve Sullivan continues to lead the Wings in the right direction.

Afetr a rough stretch the Wings find themselves on a 3 game winning streak, and the timing couldn't of been any better. Thanks to these recent big wins and losses by the other teams, Detroit now finds themselves 3pts ahead of Nashville in 7th spot with a game in hand, and 7pts up on Phoenix and Edmonton who are fighting for that 8th and final spot.

Rumors have it that the Wings are searching high and low for a backup goaltender so they can rest Manny Legace, and it has also been mentioned that the Wings are actively searching to bulk up the D for the playoff run.
