Doug Weight To Pond

Jan Lapiolahti

GM, Florida Panthers

Panthers were between a rock and a hard place with Doug Weight. They asked Weight to lift his NTC because with the new CBA he wouldnt fit into the Panthers lineup. At first Weight was intruged by the idea but then shot it down as he was almost traded to Sharks. Panthers retaliated by telling Weight that he would be sent down to AHL unless his NTC is lifted. We think Weight thought Panthers were bluffing but that was not the case as Panthers sent Weight down a 2 weeks ago. After this communtication between Weight's agent and Panthers GM opened again. Panthers GM told the agent that Panthers could find Weight a new team if they submitted him a list of teams he'd consider moving rather that sitting out the season in the farm. After some back and forth emails a list was received and Panthers GM got to work. Now a week later Panthers have dealt Doug Weight to Anaheim Ducks for Petr Cajanek and a 3rd round pick.

"Doug has been a huge part of our team and I never wanted him to leave otherwise I wouldnt have given him a NTC to start with. But with the new economy of the league we were forced to make the move. Had we been able to renogiate a new contract with him we would have but the league shot down that idea. Were happy we could send Doug to a team he wanted to play for in Anaheim were he'll get top ice time and most likely the captaincy" Panthers GM
