Panthers Cut Salary

Jan Lapiolahti

GM, Florida Panthers

Florida-

Florida Panthers made two trades last night. First in a salary cutting move and no small one they dealt off 9M$ man John LeClair and Dave Scarthard along with a late pick and a small bag of cash to Edmonton Oilers for veterans Martin Gelinas and Steve Staios.

In the deal Panthers basically lose 7M$ in salary and acquire much needed veterans onto a youngish team. Panthers GM thinks Gelinas can do the same even more than LeClair could do for them and almost 7M$ cheaper too. Steve Staios is a great leader what the Panthers needed on the blueline. He's one of the most underrated stay-home dmen in the league. Departure of Scarthard leaves Panthers with a whole on the 3rd line center.

The second deal of the night took place with St Louis Blues. Panthers acquired hard nosed left winger Mike LecLerc for Kamil Piros and Greg Campbell.

Mike LecLerc gives the Panthers an versatile left winger capable of playing 2nd or 3rd line duties. Losing Kamil Piros wasnt a big deal but losing Greg Campbell was hard said Panthers GM "He's a great prospect.. I hate losing him but this deal makes us better now and in the future. We think Campbells upside is Mike LecLerc type of player"
